Why might a job or licensing application ask for a card?
The organization handling your application determines how fingerprints must reach its screening system. When it asks for physical cards, an appointment can provide the capture and the completed cards it requires. Having fingerprints taken in Florida does not automatically mean the request should be sent through Florida FDLE.
Ask for the exact board or agency name and its written requirements. A nursing licence in another state, a particular federal application and a personal FBI record request can follow different procedures. Do not assume that one card or one background check serves all three.
Is an FD-258 card the same as Live Scan?
No. Live Scan describes electronic capture using a scanner. Depending on the arranged service, that capture may lead to an electronic agency submission or to a physical card printed for mailing. Ask what you will leave with and whether any submission is included.
If a recipient specifies ink impressions or another production method, show those instructions before the appointment. Acceptance of the final card belongs to the recipient; the use of a scanner alone does not confirm it.
When should you ask about FD-1164 instead?
The FBI publishes FD-1164 for fingerprinting in personal Identity History Summary requests. A general reference to “FBI fingerprints” is not enough to choose a form or route. Confirm whether you need a personal report, an agency-controlled screening or cards only.
