Who can request an FBI report from abroad?
- People abroad who need an FBI report for a visa, residency, work, study, adoption or personal review.
Where do I get fingerprints taken outside the U.S.?
Use a local police service or a private fingerprint technician that prepares U.S. fingerprint cards. U.S. embassies and consulates do not provide this service. The FBI publishes FD-1164 for personal report requests; confirm the required format before capture.
What are the steps for a direct FBI request?
Start the request with the FBI. For the direct online route, have your fingerprints taken and mail the original card with the required printed confirmation to the FBI address in your instructions. The FBI processes the request after receiving the required materials. A scan or photo of the card is not the original.
Can I use an FBI channeler while abroad?
Departmental Order channelers can serve only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents physically in the U.S. or its territories. Being a U.S. citizen abroad does not satisfy the location requirement. Use the direct FBI route for an overseas request.

No. In this route the original physical card must still be mailed with the required confirmation.
