Do Summer Camp Staff and Counselors Need Fingerprinting in Florida?

Florida summer-camp screening covers program personnel under the applicable camp rules. DCF’s guidance addresses owners, operators, employees and volunteers, with a limited supervised-volunteer exception. A camp should coordinate the required Level 2 process before staff begin their covered duties; a general police letter is not automatically an equivalent.

What is different about a seasonal camp?

A short summer assignment is still an assignment caring for children. Ask whether the program is a summer day camp or an overnight camp and which instructions its organizer uses. DCF explains that summer camps are not licensed by DCF, but that does not remove their applicable background-screening obligations. Avoid confusing a lack of facility licensing with an exemption from personnel checks.

Do volunteers and overseas counselors follow the same assumptions?

DCF describes a narrow exception for occasional volunteers working less than ten hours per month while continuously in sight of a screened person. It is not a rule for all Florida volunteers. DCF also says international counselors need Level 2 screening after arrival in Florida. A report from a counselor’s home country does not automatically complete that Florida process.

How should staff plan before opening day?

Ask the organizer about current screening windows, possible rescreening and whether a qualifying existing record applies. Camp guidance includes timing conditions that depend on continuity of care work and employment gaps. The organizer should initiate the appropriate Clearinghouse process and supply instructions. Keep the transaction reference, then ask the camp to confirm its review rather than assuming a capture receipt is final clearance.

What should you confirm before fingerprinting?

Ask the requesting organization for its current screening instructions, any required registration and the identifiers for your application. ORI identifies the agency route; an OCA may identify the organization within a particular program. Bring the requested identification. For a Hallandale Beach visit, show Oraz Fingerprinting those instructions so the team can confirm the available service before booking.

Does your program ask for an ORI?

Identify the requesting program first. Use the directory as a reference and confirm the correct value with the organization before submission.

Questions about this topic

Is a one-week counselor automatically exempt?

No. A short contract alone does not remove screening requirements.

Can an overseas police check replace Florida screening?

Do not assume it replaces the Level 2 process described by DCF.

Can all volunteers use the ten-hour exception?

No. It is program-specific and includes supervision conditions.
